Martine Jacobs is one of the participants of the exhibition Contemporary pastel in Europe will take place between October 17th and 20th, in the various locations of the show, with the following calendar:

  • Cuneo (Province of Cuneo Meeting Centre): Thursday, October 17, 17:30;
  • Bra (Giovanni Arpino Multifunctional Hall): Friday, October 18, 17:30;
  • Magliano Alfieri (Alfieri Castle): Saturday October 19, 10:00;
  • Alba (San Domenico church): Saturday October 19, 18:30;
  • Fossano (Acaja Castle): Sunday October 20, 10:00;
  • Mondov� (Ancient Town Hall): Sunday October 20, 17:00.

Contemporary pastel in Europe celebrates the 300th anniversary of the foundation of Saint Petersburg (1703-2003), and represents contemporary artists� homage to the Italian pastellist Rosalba Carriera (1675-1756), and the Russian pastellist Zinaida Serebriakova (1884-1967). It has been organized and coordinated by the Europastel Exhibition Board, with the collaboration of Ferrero Foundation of Alba.

The exhibition has obtained the patronage of UNESCO, of the Council of Europe Secretary General, of Piedmont Region and Cuneo Province. In Russia, the Ministry for Arts and Culture of the Russian Federation, Saint Petersburg Cultural Committee, the Committee for Saint Petersburg Tercentenary Celebrations, the State Museum of the Hermitage, the Russian Academy of Fine Arts, Saint Petersburg Museum of History and the State Museum of Urban Sculpture granted their patronage.

Besides the purpose of achieving a better knowledge of the soft pastel technique and contributing to its diffusion in Europe, the project of the exhibition aims to offer the chance of a meeting to artists from all over the continent, in two countries with a great cultural and pictorial tradition as Russia and Italy.

The announcement of the contest gathered a harvest of 533 artists coming from 30 European countries (approximately one third from Russia, one third from Italy, and one third from other countries), which sent 1350 works made in the dry (soft) pastel technique.

On the 3rd and 4th of June 2002, the six members of the international jury (the director of the Hermitage's Department of Western European Art, Drawings and Pastels, Mrs. Assia Kantor Gukovskaia; the director of Jaroslavl New Academy of Fine Arts Mr. Serguej Korovine; the director of the Fine Arts Museum of Nice, Mrs. Beatrice Debraband�re-Descamps; the Dutch artist and pastel painter Mrs. Annemie Janssen, two Italian artists and pastellists, Renzo Magnanini and Paola Meineri Gazzola), guests of the Ferrero Foundation in Alba, selected the works to be displayed during the exhibition. 318 pastels have been chosen, made by 236 artists coming from 28 European countries.
